Pregnancy Tests

Clearblue® offers a range of home pregnancy tests, all of which detect the clinically proven urinary pregnancy marker – human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG) to provide accurate and trusted results in early pregnancy testing.

Fertilization

This is the process in which the sperm and the egg unite. It happens in the ampullary region of the uterine tube, also known as fallopian tube. The initial single cell formed after this fusion is known as a zygote and will start experiencing many divisions to increase its number of cells in order to be able to form the embryo and the placenta (trophoblastic cells) later on.1

What is human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG)?

hCG is a hormone synthesized by trophoblastic cells of the developing placenta, and its production starts shortly after the embryo implants in the endometrium, the inner lining of tissue in the uterus. This is the hormone detected by pregnancy tests.2

hCG prevents the corpus luteum degradating and therefore it continues producing progesterone, estradiol and estrone until the placenta has developed enough to take over.1,2

How is hCG used to detect pregnancy?

Levels of hCG rise rapidly and predictably in the earliest days of pregnancy3,4 and it usually first appears in urine 8-10 days (range 6-12 days) following the estimated day of conception when using the most sensitive laboratory assays.5 The levels of hCG in early pregnancy have also been found to be highly similar between women.5,6 This makes hCG an ideal urinary marker for quickly and accurately assessing whether a woman is pregnant or not.

Some Clearblue® Pregnancy Tests can be used up to 6 days before the missed period

Published literature shows that hCG levels reach at least 50 milli-International Units per millilitre (mIU/ml) on the day a pregnant woman's period is expected.6-8 The Clearblue® Early Digital, and Clearblue® Early Detection Pregnancy Tests offer the possibility to test even 6 days before the missed period as both tests are highly sensitive (10mIU/mL).9-10

However, not all pregnant women who test before the day their period is due will obtain a "Pregnant" result. This is because urinary hCG levels may still be too low to detect, which can happen when testing earlier than recommended, miscalculating the expected period date, using urine that is too dilute (for example, not using first-morning urine), or drinking too much fluid beforehand. The graph below shows a typical rise in urinary hCG from the first detection of pregnancy.

All Clearblue® Pregnancy Tests are over 99% accurate from the day of the expected period.11

At Clearblue® we believe that women need a result they can be confident in and act on, and therefore we provide pregnancy tests products that deliver over 99% accuracy from the day of the expected period.11

All Clearblue® Pregnancy Tests are rigorously tested using early pregnancy urine samples from women whose luteinizing hormone (LH) surge day is known and from which the day the period is due can be reliably estimated.6 By using these samples it is possible to assess the proportion of pregnant women expected to have sufficient hCG levels in their urine sample to generate a "Pregnant" result, on each day with respect to the day of expected period. 

If women choose to test early with Clearblue® Pregnancy Tests, the likelihood of detecting pregnancy before the day the period is due is clearly displayed on the product packaging. Clearblue® advises any woman who tests and gets a ‘Not Pregnant’ result, but still suspects pregnancy, to test again on the day she expects her period, if she tested early, or in a further 3 days if her period is overdue.

Digital results for greater accuracy in consumers’ hands

Our most sensitive digital test, the Clearblue® Early Digital Pregnancy Test, can detect pregnancy up to 6 days before the missed period.9 It gives unmistakably clear ‘Pregnant’ or ‘Not Pregnant’ results in words eliminating the human error that can occur when reading traditional line tests.12

The Clearblue® Early Digital Pregnancy Test  is over 99% accurate from 4 days before the missed period - for both positive and negative results she can trust even when testing early. Additionally, it has an extra wide tip for easy sampling and is the first and only test with a unique stop light let her know when enough urine has been sampled.

Visual signs give consumers confidence

The Clearblue® Early Detection Pregnancy Test can also provide early detection of hCG - 6 days before the missed period. It the first Clearblue® pregnancy test with DualSense® Technology, a unique FSH-modulated hCG scavenger system which may help prevent false positive results in the very small number of non-pregnant women who may have low levels of hCG in their urine.
