When you become pregnant, your body produces the pregnancy hormone, human Chorionic Gonadotrophin (hCG). The amount of hCG in your body doubles approximately every 2 – 3 days, and reaches a maximum at around 7 – 12 weeks into the pregnancy. It stays at a higher than normal level for the rest of the pregnancy, and for up to 3 weeks after giving birth. The level of hCG can be elevated above normal levels for up to 9 weeks if you have had a miscarriage or a termination. Click here to see an explanation of how the level of hCG changes in pregnancy.

The Clearblue DIGITAL Pregnancy Test with Conception Indicator works by detecting the pregnancy hormone in your urine and is over 99% accurate when used from the day your period is due. You can use it up to 4 days before your period is due but if you get a ‘Not Pregnant’ result, you should test again when your period is due. The levels of pregnancy hormone in your urine may not be high enough to be detected yet.

An optical reader inside the test stick interprets the result for you and shows this on a digital display: ‘Pregnant’ or ‘Not Pregnant’. If the result is ‘Pregnant’ the Smart Dual Sensor^TM also monitors the concentration of the pregnancy hormone, and provides an estimate of how many weeks ago you conceived: 1-2, 2-3 or 3+. This is displayed together with the ‘Pregnant’ result.

Clearblue Digital Pregnancy Test is over 99% accurate in detecting whether or not you are pregnant, when used from the day your period is due.

The Conception Indicator is 92% accurate at detecting when you conceived, when testing with the first urine of the day. The estimate is based on the level of hCG in your urine. The level of hCG varies from woman to woman, and it is therefore possible that the Conception Indicator might occasionally give misleading results.
If you are testing more than 6 weeks after conception the Conception Indicator may give unexpected results. This is because the level of hCG in the urine is too high to provide an accurate estimate of the time since conception.

When you are ready to do your Clearblue Digital Pregnancy Test with Conception Indicator, simply remove the Test Stick from its individual foil wrapper and take off the cap. With the tip pointing downwards, hold just the Absorbent Sampler in your urine stream for 5 seconds. Alternatively, you can collect a sample of your urine in a clean, dry container and immerse just the Absorbent Sampler in the urine for 20 seconds only.

When the urine sample is applied to the Absorbent Sampler it is detected by the test. A flashing ‘Wait’ symbol (egg timer) is shown on the Display demonstrating that the test is working correctly. Within 3 minutes the Display will show a ‘Pregnant’ or ‘Not Pregnant’ result. If the result is ‘Pregnant’ the ‘Wait’ symbol will continue to flash until the Conception Indicator result is displayed.

Some results may be shown in as little as 1 minute, and the result will continue to be shown on the Display for approximately 24 hours.


If you’re testing from the day your period is due, you can test any time of the day. If testing early, you should use the first urine of the day. You should avoid drinking excessive amounts of fluids before testing.

Clearblue recommends that you test from the day your period is due. However, Clearblue DIGITAL Pregnancy Test with Conception Indicator can be used up to 4 days before your period is due. If you test before your period is due and get a ‘Not Pregnant’ result, there is still a chance that you may be pregnant but that your hormone level is still not high enough for the test to detect.

In clinical testing with early pregnancy samples Clearblue DIGITAL Pregnancy Test with Conception Indicator gave the following results: 55% of women received a ‘Pregnant’ result 4 days early, 86% of women 3 days early, 97% of women two days early and 98% of women 1 day early.

The Conception Indicator tells you how many weeks ago you conceived. Conception occurs 2 weeks before your period is due.

Clearblue is more than 99% accurate when used from the day your period is due.

If you have a ‘Pregnant’ result, it is possible that you later find that you are not pregnant due to natural loss which can occur in the early stages.

If you have had a termination or a miscarriage within the last 9 weeks, the levels of hCG in your body could give you a false ‘Pregnant’ result. If you have taken fertility medications that contain hCG within the last 14 days, those can also give you a false ‘Pregnant’ result.
